One even more beautiful and imaginative than the other.  The so-called facing bricks however were not placed because they look good, but mainly served as a landmark. Before postal codes and house numbers were invented, postmen in the city had great difficulty finding the right address for their letters. They sometimes searched for hours before they found who their post was intended for. The introduction of facing bricks solved that problem. From then you would ­just say, for example, I live on Sint Jansstraat in the red four-poster bed and then everyone immediately knew exactly where that was. On the corner of Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Nieuwebrugsteeg, many facing bricks have been laid in a facade. Not because so many people live in the building, but to preserve the bricks after houses on which the pieces of art stood, had been demolished.
